Daily Update: July 13, 2011

Born in 972 at Albach, Hildesheim, Bavaria, Germany,В today’s SaintВ was the son of Gisella of Burgundy and Henry II the Quarrelsome, Duke of Bavaria.Educated at the cathedral school in Hildesheim by bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg, he became Duke of Bavaria himself in 995 upon his father’s death, which ended Henry’s thoughts of becoming a priest. He ascended to the throne of Germany as King Henry IIВ in 1002, and was crowned King of Pavia, Italy on May 15,В 1004.He marriedВ Cunigunde of Luxembourg (later a Saint in her own right), but was never a father; some sources claim the two lived celibately, but there is no evidence either way.Henry’s brother rebelled against his power, and Henry was forced to defeat him on the battlefield, but later forgave him, and the two reconciled.Henry was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1014 by Pope Benedict VIII; he was the last of the Saxon dynasty of emperors. He founded schools, quelled rebellions, protected the frontiers, worked to establish a stable peace in Europe, andВ reformed the Church while respecting its independence. He fostered missions, and established Bamberg, Germany as a center for missions to Slavic countries.Started the construction of the cathedral at Basel, Switzerland; it took nearly 400 years to complete. Both Henry and Saint Cunigunde were prayerful people, and generous to the poor.FollowingВ his wife’sВ death, he considered becoming a monk, but the abbot of Saint-Vanne at Verdun, France refused his application, and told him to keep his place in the world where he could do much good for people and the advancement of God’s kingdom. He is the Patron Saint of kings, of childless people, and of people rejected by religious orders.Today is also the birthday of my daughter’s friend Ashley (1988).

I woke up this morning at 8:00 am; through messing around with my BlackBerry trackball last night, it now scrolls fine, but no longer clicks. This is not a problem that I can’t work around; I can scroll to whatever I need, then hit the Enter key, which was rarely used on my BlackBerry. So, I can limp along for another 18 days until I start using my BlackBerry 9650 Bold.

I started my laundry, then ate my breakfast toast while reading the paper.I then went under the vanity and pulled out the new photo album I knew was under there, and put the June 2011 and May 2011 photos in said photo album.(I had stalled on putting photos in the photo albums when Michelle graduated from high school, in the spring of 2006.Since then, Richard and I have had two large vacations (with oodles of photos) and one wedding; so I opted to approach my photos cautiously and backwards.) I then said the Seventh Day of my Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and did my devotional reading via the computer; then I ironed my casino shirts and finished washing my clothes.I got a text from Michelle asking me to bring a copy of my 2010 1040 tax form, so I printed that out for her; meanwhile, Richard had washed the sheets on our bed, which I put on the bed.As I had some time to spend, I spent the next hour or so doing Advance Daily Update Drafts for this weblog for August 1st and 2nd.

Richard and I left the house at 1:00 pm, heading west on US-190.In Opelousas we cashed a check at our banks, then ate Chinese for lunch at Creswell Lane Restaurant (which we call Pop’s).After lunch Richard purchased my Powerball and Louisiana Lotto lottery tickets for me; then we headed for Lafayette.Between Opelousas and Lafayette I got a call from my dentist reminding me of my dental appointment tomorrow afternoon.В

At 2:45 pm we arrived at the Lafayette Public Library Southside Branch; we drove up to the window and picked up The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany by Susannah Heschel (requested via inter-library loan on 06-16-11).We then drove to Baton Rouge and arrived at Sammy’s Grill at 4:30 pm.Michelle and Dustin arrived half an hour later, and we had a very good visit and dinner (I had the boiled chilled Shrimp Remoulade).Dustin then left for an appointment in Hammond, and I rode in Michelle’s car (with Richard following in the truck) to the extended stay motel where she and Dustin are living while house-hunting.We visited with Michelle; I gave her the tax information, signed a form for her, then Richard and I left shortly after 7:00 pm for home.We arrived home shortly after 9:00 pm, and I set about finishing today’s Daily Update before taking a bath. But I do wish to report that I have figured out how to do about 97% of the stuff I normally do on my BlackBeery using the Enter key instead of the trackball click, which no longer works.(And, no, my new trackball has not shown up yet, and by now I’m really not expecting it to show up until I no longer need it.)

Tomorrow being Thursday, I will be going to Wal-Mart to get salad supplies, getting hard copies made of my April 2011 photos, and making lunch salads;.I will also be packaging Liz Ellen’s usual monthly package and mailing it out to her, and at 1:45 pm I will be going up to Mamou for my dental appointment.
